Configuration Management Workshop

To enhance understanding and quality of configuration management activities, on the afternoon of June 30, Tinh Van Group organized a "Configuration Management Workshop" with the participation of many key personnel and programmers of Tinh Van Group.

Representing the Board of Management at the workshop were Deputy General Director of Tinh Van Group – Mr. Pham Thuc Truong Luong, Deputy Director of Tinh Van Outsourcing (TVO) – Mr. Nguyen Son Tung, Deputy Director of Tinh Van Solutions (TVS) – Mr. Nguyen Vinh Tho, and Chief Technology Officer of Tinh Van Telecom (TVT) – Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duy.

At the workshop, speakers presented issues related to Configuration Management as well as tools for effective Configuration Management: "Configuration Management for Java-based projects using the Continuum automated build tool" presented by Mr. Ngo Phan Hai – Project Team Leader at TVO; "Configuration Management for DotNet-based projects using Team Foundation Server" presented by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai – Head of Software Solutions Department at TVS; and "Distributed Configuration Management for projects using Bazaar version control system" presented by Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duy – CTO of TVT.

According to a survey, over 80% of attendees rated the workshop as a useful activity that provided essential knowledge about current Configuration Management practices and the challenges for Configuration Management in Tinh Van Group's member units. Some suggestions from departments at the workshop will also be submitted as improvement proposals for management consideration.

Software Configuration Management is a process in software development that emerged about 20 years ago. This process helps developers control changes and software system architecture. Requirements for Configuration Management can be found directly or indirectly in common standards or software process models such as CMM/CMMI, ISO 15504, or ISO 9001:2000. In CMM and CMMI, Configuration Management is a mandatory requirement from Level 2, the most basic level of these two models.

Currently, Tinh Van Group is simultaneously implementing three quality management systems: ISO 9001:2008, ISO/IEC 27001:2005, and CMMI Level 3. In practice, good Configuration Management resolves many difficulties in projects, especially large ones. Therefore, Tinh Van Group places great importance on Configuration Management, and the "Configuration Management Workshop" held on June 30 is one of the practical and necessary activities to enhance understanding and further improve the quality management system of Tinh Van Group.
